		<description>Levemir Collection – iPad appJune 2011 / UX Design—
The Partners have been working with Novo Nordisk on Levemir, a modern insulin. Levemir staffers worldwide were finding it tricky to keep on top of the enormous amount of material relevant available: scientific studies, scientific literature reviews, position statements, promotional documents and video.
—
My solution, an iPad app (with some considered information architecture) led to The Partners being tasked with a total overhaul of the complete Levemir materials across platforms.
—
I was initially briefed to create a portable guide to everything Levemir. My solution was an iPad app, since it automatically keeps in sync with the constantly updating content base. Additionally, users can send materials by email from right within the app, bookmark content they use often and play video content right within the app.

		<description>GO RED!January 2011 / Web Design / Product Design—
The Partners have been working with Richard House Children's Hospice on their annual fundraiser GO RED. We've asked over a hundred professional illustrators to play a giant game of consequences, then created a website where you can mix and match their illustrations to create your own combination, which you can buy, as long as nobody else has beaten you to it – each print is completely unique! If you choose to buy a print, the money goes to help the kids at Richard House, London's first childrens' hospice.

		<description>iPlayer IdeasJune 2010 / Web Design / Product Design—
The BBC's iPlayer is a fantastic site with an amazing depth of content, and poses great design and UI challenges. Here's an alternative vision of how it could work.
—
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-iMac.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="402" width_o="1024" height_o="615" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-iMac_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
—

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-menu.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="402" width_o="1024" height_o="615" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-menu_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
The redesigned iPlayer is split into four. Browse suggests programmes, both editor suggestions and automatic recommendations. Find helps you find a specific show. Surf is a new feature - channel surfing for the iPlayer. It's a bit like Google's I'm Feeling Lucky crossed with a browser history. Live lets you watch live, with a programme guide for what's on now and next.
—

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-screen-1.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="402" width_o="1024" height_o="615" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-screen-1_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
The browse section also appears directly on the homepage. When Browsing, the programmes appear in a ‘feed’ of both radio &#38; TV content, indicated by the icons on the top left of each programme. The feed is separated into BBC editors' picks and personalised recommendations. You can filter the feed in main navigation, to see just TV, for example. You can also filter by category (e.g. ‘Comedy’). Favourite programmes are shown in the right-hand column. These show the most recent episode in the series, and can be expanded to see all episodes that are available.
—

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-screen-2.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="402" width_o="1024" height_o="615" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-screen-2_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
You can click the icon in the top right of a column to expand it.
—

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-screen-3.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="402" width_o="1024" height_o="615" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-screen-3_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
Moving the mouse over a show reveals the full description and supplementary information in a drop-down, avoiding the need to load the programme just to read the description.
—

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-screen-4.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="402" width_o="1024" height_o="615" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/2074/1110729/iPlayer-screen-4_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
Finding a specific show on iPlayer now has its own section. You can search in natural language – for example 'show about boxing on bbc four on wed' or 'shows with Lauren Laverne' will give sensible results. This is achieved by parsing the query for titles, keywords, subject matter, presenters, actors and references to time or channel of broadcast.
If you prefer, full schedules are included and expandable via the icon top-right.
—

Ratings &#38; Recommendations
Ratings are created using an improved system, which unobtrusively collects much more nuanced information than the current star system. If you choose to rate a programme, you are presented with a set of adjectives, from which you can choose up to three, one per group. The adjectives all refer to specific aspects of the programme which you can essentially rate as bad, good or very good.
Laughs: Funny / Hilarious / Not funny
Facts: Informative / Fascinating / Lightweight
Plot: Clever / Ingenious / Simplistic
Script: Engaging / Gripping / Dull
Visuals: Nice / Stunning / Bland
Music: Nice / Excellent / Dull
Explanations: Clear / Very clear / Confusing
Content: Surprising / Shocking / Predictable
According to their viewing habits and ratings, users are matched for recommendations with their ‘neighbours’. The current practice of gathering recommendations through friends, although it probably produces passable results most of the time, still relies on the assumption that your friends share your taste. Instead, my suggested rating system pairs you with others who like (almost) all the same things as you, then recommends to you the programmes that they’ve rated highly, that you’ve not yet watched or listened to.
You can still make recommendations to friends, simply using the standard Facebook/Digg/Reddit icons.

		<description>The Golden CockerelApril 2010 / Illustration / Typography / Book—
As a child I loved gruesome stories, and hated the moralising endings most children's authors seem to love. So when I discovered Pushkin's Tale of the Golden Cockerel, I was enchanted, and knew at once that I would illustrate it one day.

The illustrations reference the formal conventions of Indian miniature paintings and the symmetry of Russian nesting dolls. There is also broader symmetry of composition over many pages, accentuated by a novel format which can be both a poster-frieze and a book.

Photographs of the print edition to be uploaded soon.

		<description>Dictionary TodayJanuary 2010 / Typography / Conceptual—
Concept-stage designs for a dictionary. I was asked to consider a dictionary design project and given a very broad remit. I suggested that paper dictionaries were superceded in almost all practical aspects by digital dictionaries, but that it was often fun to flick through a dictionary. So I created a dictionary for browsing, with lots of intricate typographic detail.

Definitions are set in one of three type sizes, linked to the frequency with which people look up that word on the Oxford English Dictionary online. Definitions are also set in a typeface or lettering styles contemporary with the time of the word's origin, which required the creation of one custom typeface based on the earliest forms of the Roman alphabet.

To allow all this variation, a typographic grid based on the Fibonacci sequence was used to allow many different sized elements to fit together. I prepared two different conceptual mockups, one using the freeform grid and giving it lots of space, and one using a more traditional grid.

Each dictionary section is to begin with an opening page which uses a different paper stock to the rest of the dictionary, illustrated with an illuminated letter by a contemporary illustrator. The heavier paper stock allows the reader to find the start of a section quickly by feel.

Full development is documented at dictionarytoday.dlow.org

		<description>Understanding DataSeptember 2009 / Web design / Academia—
I recently completed a dissertation on data visualisation and its effects on human perception and thought: understandingdata.manofscience.co.uk

I also looked at the emergence of the zooming user interface in parallel with the ability to handle data at ever increasing levels of detail. For this reason I decided to present my dissertation within a zooming user interface, typeset in a fractal fashion, with image detail and relevant information at many zoom levels.

		<description>Lollipop BakeryMay 2009 / Branding / Packaging / Web design—
I was asked to create the complete branding of The Lollipop Bakery, a cupcake bakery to be based in Beijing, including the brand identity, website and packaging, right down to suggesting shapes which could decorate the cakes. The bakery was to retain links with it's London origin, and sell to both expats and Beijing locals.

Photography was provided by the fantastic Carlos Lumiere.

The branding is primarily visual, intended to cross the language barrier. The logo resembles both a cupcake and a lollipop, and incorporating flower and heart motifs. Elements from the mark can be cut from coloured icing and placed atop the cakes, creating a key to the flavours on offer.

The website uses a simple text block over an image which fills the browser window, forming a slide-show featuring the many cake flavours on offer.
