		<description>The Golden CockerelApril 2010 / Illustration / Typography / Book—
As a child I loved gruesome stories, and hated the moralising endings most children's authors seem to love. So when I discovered Pushkin's Tale of the Golden Cockerel, I was enchanted, and knew at once that I would illustrate it one day.

The illustrations reference the formal conventions of Indian miniature paintings and the symmetry of Russian nesting dolls. There is also broader symmetry of composition over many pages, accentuated by a novel format which can be both a poster-frieze and a book.

Photographs of the print edition to be uploaded soon.

		<description>Dictionary TodayJanuary 2010 / Typography / Conceptual—
Concept-stage designs for a dictionary. I was asked to consider a dictionary design project and given a very broad remit. I suggested that paper dictionaries were superceded in almost all practical aspects by digital dictionaries, but that it was often fun to flick through a dictionary. So I created a dictionary for browsing, with lots of intricate typographic detail.

Definitions are set in one of three type sizes, linked to the frequency with which people look up that word on the Oxford English Dictionary online. Definitions are also set in a typeface or lettering styles contemporary with the time of the word's origin, which required the creation of one custom typeface based on the earliest forms of the Roman alphabet.

To allow all this variation, a typographic grid based on the Fibonacci sequence was used to allow many different sized elements to fit together. I prepared two different conceptual mockups, one using the freeform grid and giving it lots of space, and one using a more traditional grid.

Each dictionary section is to begin with an opening page which uses a different paper stock to the rest of the dictionary, illustrated with an illuminated letter by a contemporary illustrator. The heavier paper stock allows the reader to find the start of a section quickly by feel.

Full development is documented at dictionarytoday.dlow.org

		<description>Understanding DataSeptember 2009 / Web design / Academia—
I recently completed a dissertation on data visualisation and its effects on human perception and thought: understandingdata.manofscience.co.uk

I also looked at the emergence of the zooming user interface in parallel with the ability to handle data at ever increasing levels of detail. For this reason I decided to present my dissertation within a zooming user interface, typeset in a fractal fashion, with image detail and relevant information at many zoom levels.

		<description>Lollipop BakeryMay 2009 / Branding / Packaging / Web design—
I was asked to create the complete branding of The Lollipop Bakery, a cupcake bakery to be based in Beijing, including the brand identity, website and packaging, right down to suggesting shapes which could decorate the cakes. The bakery was to retain links with it's London origin, and sell to both expats and Beijing locals.

Photography was provided by the fantastic Carlos Lumiere.

The branding is primarily visual, intended to cross the language barrier. The logo resembles both a cupcake and a lollipop, and incorporating flower and heart motifs. Elements from the mark can be cut from coloured icing and placed atop the cakes, creating a key to the flavours on offer.

The website uses a simple text block over an image which fills the browser window, forming a slide-show featuring the many cake flavours on offer.

A concept for a website which helps you keep track of things you'd like to read online – a cross between bookmarking, an RSS reader and a personalised newspaper or magazine.

The development of this concept is documented at thebookmachine.dlow.org

An extension for your web browser adds a button which, when clicked, saves the page you're currently on to your ofInterest reading list. The list is displayed with the most recent items first, but can be sorted and filtered using tags. (You can specify your own tags, but to save time the site suggests tags which others commonly used).

		<description>'Two/Thirds' – Exhibition WebsiteMay 2009 / Web design—
I created the website for the exhibition 'Two/Thirds' – Central Saint Martins Graphic Design second years exhibiting at Free Range. The site is a simple image slideshow, beginning with the show poster and then displaying images of students' work, photographed in-situ at the exhibition. The minimal navigation matches the visual identity of the exhibition.

		<description>Inventory Studio – WebsiteMarch 2009 / Web design—
I worked with Inventory Studio to create inventorystudio.co.uk, a website showcasing the work of this talented studio.

The site uses a side-scrolling layout, similar to looking at books and other printed materials spread out on a tabletop. The navigation menu stays in the same position at all times, allowing you to navigate from any page on the site to any other.
