The Golden Cockerel
April 2010 / Illustration / Typography / Book
—As a child I loved gruesome stories, and hated the moralising endings most children's authors seem to love. So when I discovered Pushkin's Tale of the Golden Cockerel, I was enchanted, and knew at once that I would illustrate it one day.
The illustrations reference the formal conventions of Indian miniature paintings and the symmetry of Russian nesting dolls. There is also broader symmetry of composition over many pages, accentuated by a novel format which can be both a poster-frieze and a book.
Photographs of the print edition to be uploaded soon.
